The Mawlid of Imam al-Barzanji

Mishkat Media has released a beautiful live recording of the celebrated Mawlid of Imam al-Barzanji. A classic of Islamic culture, it is a sung celebration of the birth and greatness of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.
The recording was made in Cape Town at the annual Mawlid Jama’at at the Al-Zawiya mosque, under the direction of Shaykh Seraj Hendricks.
The performance is available on DVD, with full English subtitles of the Arabic recitation as well as several bonus features, including an explanation by Shaykh Seraj on ‘Understanding the Mawlid’. It is also available as an MP3 with the recitation of the mawlid only.
Like all Mishkat Media products, all profits go to the Cambridge New Mosque Project!

South African Islam’s unique cultural heritage is showcased by the uplifting music of Zain Bhikha and Yusuf Ganief, accompanied by the Desert Rose Dhikr Choir. Lyrics mixing Arabic, English and Ndebele (a Zulu language spoken in South Africa and Zimbabwe) are accompanied by the strong percussion rhythmns of the djembe drum and the mbira.

In the second of the Heart Surgeon series on Islamic spirituality - entitled ‘The Science of Wayfaring’ - Shaykh Abdal Hakim reminds us that Islam is not just a fixed state of being, but a process of becoming. We are all returning to Allah - our aim must be that this is not just by the inevitable process of time, but that it becomes also a spiritual progress, by which Allah brings us ‘out of the shadows and into the light’.
